The Story Behind the Veil: A Look Into the History of Wedding Veils
At Berkshire Ridge, we’ve seen brides wear everything from classic cathedral-length veils to whimsical blushers and even flower crowns in place of traditional veils. But why veils? Do you know their history?
Let’s take a moment to uncover the rich (and sometimes surprising) history of the wedding veil.
Ancient Beginnings: Protection & Modesty
The wedding veil has been around for thousands of years. In ancient Rome, brides wore bright red or flame-colored veils called flammeum to protect themselves from evil spirits and jealous onlookers. These veils covered the bride completely—head to toe—and symbolized purity, modesty, and obedience.
In other cultures, veils were also used as a symbol of status or wealth. The more elaborate the veil, the more elevated the bride’s social standing.
Arranged Marriages & The Big Reveal
During the Middle Ages and Renaissance, arranged marriages were the norm, and veils served a very practical (and sometimes comical) purpose: they kept the groom from seeing the bride’s face until after the vows were exchanged. This way, a marriage could be completed before any second thoughts crept in!
Victorian Influence & Romantic Symbolism
It wasn’t until Queen Victoria’s 1840 wedding to Prince Albert that the white wedding dress and veil as we know it today became iconic. Her white lace veil set a new trend that spread across Europe and America, shifting the veil's meaning from protection and modesty to romance and elegance. From then on, veils became more about personal expression than tradition. Whether long and trailing or short and sweet, they added a graceful finishing touch to the bridal look.
Modern Brides, Modern Meaning
Today, the veil is optional—but still holds powerful meaning for many brides. For some, it’s a nod to tradition. For others, it’s a fashion statement or a moment of pure drama when it floats down the aisle or catches the breeze during golden hour portraits.
At Berkshire Ridge, we’ve seen veils flow across our sunlit patios, swirl in front of our crystal chandeliers, and catch raindrops or rose petals during some unforgettable “I dos.” And no matter how trends change, the veil continues to be a timeless symbol of love, transformation, and the start of something new.
